Two things catch people out. 60 fps exports are above the 40 fps limit, so export at 30. And 1080×1920 vertical is taller than the 1900-pixel web maximum; 720×1280 is exactly 9:16 and fits, as does 1080×1350 (4:5).
How long can a Premium video be on X?
Under 4 hours, at up to 16 GB, when you post from x.com or X for iOS. Videos between 2 and 4 hours must be 720p. On Android, Premium subscribers can upload up to 10 minutes. Everyone else gets 140 seconds on every platform (X Help).
Older X pages disagree. The About X Premium page still says "up to ~3 hours" and 8 GB, and the Media Studio FAQ also says about 3 hours and 8 GB. The two newer video pages say 4 hours and 16 GB, so we use those for regular posts and 8 GB for Media Studio.
Media Studio (a separate upload library, not the regular composer) takes .MP4 and .MOV up to 8 GB. X recommends re-exporting .mov files as .mp4 for faster upload and processing.
Can you add captions and a thumbnail on X?
- Captions: viewers turn captions on through their device accessibility settings or the CC control on the web. X says not all videos will have captions, and that its speech-to-text uses Microsoft Azure Cognitive Services. The help page describes no way for the uploader to add a caption file (X Help). Burn captions in if they matter.
- Thumbnail: X states no pixel size. In Media Studio, a custom thumbnail must have the same aspect ratio as the video (Media Studio FAQ).

Our recommendation, chosen to sit inside the X limits above. The full guide: how to make a launch video.
Keep the launch cut under 140 seconds so the founder, the team and the company account can all post the same file, Premium or not. In our study of 150 top Product Hunt launches, the median launch video was 78 seconds. Burn in captions: X doesn't let you attach a caption file to a regular post.
