Already have the file? Drop it into the video specs checker to see which platforms accept it. It runs in your browser and nothing uploads.
- Facebook (all videos post as reels): Facebook says all videos are now shared as reels, of any length or orientation (Create a Facebook reel). The old "10 GB, 240 minutes" figures are no longer on the current pages.
- Threads: From Meta's Threads API documentation; the Threads help centre gives no numbers, and the app may differ.
- Bluesky: From Bluesky's official posts (3 minutes, 300 MB); Bluesky has no help-centre spec page.
What are the app store preview video specs?
App store previews aren't social posts, so they're kept out of the table above. Their rules are stricter: Apple takes only fixed resolutions and 15 to 30 seconds of screen capture; Google Play takes a YouTube link.
| Store | Length | Aspect ratio | Max file size | Resolution | Details |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| App Store app preview | 15 to 30 s | Fixed sizes per device; portrait or landscape (iOS) | 500 MB | 886×1920 iPhone, 1200×1600 iPad, 1920×1080 Mac/TV; 30 fps max | App Store app previews specs |
| Google Play preview video | No limit stated; first 30 s autoplays | Landscape or portrait | Not stated (YouTube URL) | Not stated | Google Play preview video specs |

Which aspect ratio works on the most platforms?
Square and 4:5 are inside every published range. 16:9 works everywhere except YouTube Shorts, which takes only square or vertical. 9:16 works everywhere too, with one catch: X's web upload maximum for vertical video is 1200×1900, so a 1080×1920 file is 20 pixels too tall; 720×1280 fits. Wide cinema 2.39:1 fits LinkedIn and X but not Instagram Reels (its widest is 1.91:1). The full platform-by-ratio grid, with pixel sizes and a calculator, is on the video aspect ratio page.
What is the best video size for social media?
If you want one file that sits inside every published limit in the table: 1080×1080 (1:1), MP4, H.264, 30 fps, under 2 minutes 20 seconds and under 300 MB. That clears X's free limits (140 s, 512 MB, 1200 px, 40 fps), Bluesky's 300 MB, Instagram's 720 px and 30 fps minimums, Shorts' square-or-vertical rule and 1080p cap, and LinkedIn's Page limits.
If you can make two files, make a 1920×1080 (16:9) master for YouTube, LinkedIn, X and your site, and a 1080×1920 (9:16) cut for Reels and Shorts (720×1280 or 1080×1350 for X web uploads).
Which video specs are commonly misquoted?
- LinkedIn "10 minutes on mobile". LinkedIn's member pages list one 15-minute maximum. 10 minutes is the Company Page limit. LinkedIn specs.
- YouTube thumbnails "1280×720". YouTube's current help page says 3840×2160, minimum 640 px wide. YouTube specs.
- X Premium "3 hours, 8 GB". Older X pages say that; the newer video pages say under 4 hours and 16 GB (8 GB in Media Studio). X specs.
- Instagram "60 seconds" or "90 seconds". The 60-second help URL now shows the Reels page (20 minutes, 3 to be recommended); 90 seconds is an ad and boost figure. Instagram Reels specs.
- YouTube Shorts "60 seconds". Shorts can be 3 minutes for uploads since October 15, 2024. Shorts specs.
- Facebook "240 minutes, 10 GB". Those numbers are gone from Facebook's current pages, which now say videos post as reels of any length.
What about TikTok?
We left TikTok's organic limits out on purpose. TikTok's support site returned errors and a regional block when we tried to read it on November 4, 2026, and we only publish numbers we've read on the platform's own page. The figures we could confirm are for ads: TikTok's video ads specifications list 9:16 as recommended, up to 10 minutes and up to 500 MB (checked November 2, 2026). Those are not confirmed on TikTok's own help pages for regular posts, which may allow more.
Exporting a launch video for social
A launch video usually runs 30 to 90 seconds: in our study of 150 top Product Hunt launches the median was 78 seconds. That fits every limit above, so the real work is the shape: a 16:9 master for YouTube (which Product Hunt requires), plus a vertical cut for Reels and Shorts. The launch video guide covers length, structure and script.
