What are the types of product demo video?
There's no standard taxonomy; vendors slice it differently. It helps to think in two axes: what the demo is for, and what format it takes.
| Purpose | Who it's for | Typical length | Best format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overview demo | First-time visitors, launches | 30–90 s | Designed video with voiceover or captions |
| Feature demo | Users of one feature, release notes | 30 s–2 min | Short video or GIF |
| Full walkthrough | Evaluators, onboarding | 2–5 min, or a series | Screen recording or interactive demo |
| Personalised sales demo | One prospect | 1–3 min | Recorded video answering their question |
| Live demo | Late-stage buyers | 30–60 min | Screen share on a call |
Types drawn from Vidyard (recorded, live and overview demos), HubSpot (product vs technical demos) and Wistia (personalised sales demos).
How long should a product demo video be?
- Shorter is finished more often. Across 943,000+ business videos in 2024, about 65% of viewers finished videos under one minute versus about 20% for videos over 20 minutes; attention is highest in the first quarter (Vidyard).
- Split long demos. Vidyard recommends replacing a single 30-minute demo with a series of roughly 3-minute videos (Vidyard). Its guidance for a demo video is 2 to 5 minutes (Vidyard).
- Overview videos under a minute. In Wistia's data on 13 million videos, product videos under a minute average 50% engagement. Wistia puts demos and how-tos in the 1 to 5 minute range (Wistia).
- Live demos are different. Gong found winning live sales demos ran longer than losing ones (47 vs 36 minutes), but that's a correlation from live calls, not guidance for video (Gong).
Should you make a demo video or an interactive demo?
Both, for different moments. A video plays itself, so it works where people won't click: social feeds, launch posts, email, the top of your homepage. An interactive demo is a clickable copy of your product that buyers explore without signing up, which suits people already evaluating.
What the interactive-demo vendors' own data says (their numbers, their definitions):
- Navattic analysed 40,000+ interactive demos built on its platform: the highest-completion flows have 1 to 6 steps, and visitors spend about 2.3 minutes on marketing demos versus 6.5 on sales demos (Navattic).
- Arcade reports about 40% completion for demos of 9 to 12 steps, versus 22% for 1 to 5 steps, across 14 million sessions, and that AI voiceover is associated with 14% higher completion (Arcade).
- Vendors define "completion" differently, so their published rates range from about 29% to 88% and can't be compared directly (Storylane).
One caution on video claims in general: the popular "video lifts landing page conversions 80%" stat traces back to a vendor white paper, while Unbounce's analysis of about 35,000 landing pages found video didn't reliably improve conversion (Unbounce). Measure on your own page.
How do you make a product demo video?
- Pick one jobChoose the single workflow the viewer cares about most. One demo, one job.
- Write the pathList the 5 to 10 steps from the starting screen to the result, and cut anything that isn't on that path.
- Prepare clean dataUse a realistic demo account: real-looking names, numbers and content, no test data or personal information.
- Record or buildRecord your screen, build an interactive demo, or generate a designed video, depending on where it will live.
- Open on the outcomeShow the result in the first seconds, then how you got there.
- Close with one actionStart a trial, book a call or watch the next video.
Write for the sound off: captions or on-screen labels for every step, because most feeds autoplay muted. For a launch-day overview rather than a walkthrough, see the launch video guide.
