What changed on Product Hunt in 2025 and 2026?
Most launch guides online predate these changes. If a guide tells you to "Launch Now" or build a Coming Soon page, it's out of date.
| Change | What it means for you | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Launch Now replaced by Create Draft + Schedule (2025) | Drafts are private and shareable with co-makers. You schedule a day; it goes live at midnight PT. | PH help |
| Coming Soon pages retired (Aug 28, 2025) | No "Notify me" list on Product Hunt. Build your pre-launch list on your own site and in PH's forum thread. | PH changelog |
| Points shown instead of upvotes | Rank follows points: mainly upvotes, plus comments, weighted toward active members. Rallying brand-new accounts doesn't count for much. | PH help |
| "Featured | All" toggle replaced by "See all" | Editors still choose what's featured above the fold. Unfeatured launches sit behind an expander. | PH changelog |
| Featuring guidelines rewritten (Mar 2026) | Launches are judged on four things: Useful, Novel, High Craft, Creative. | PH help |
| Daily hunt limit (Apr 2026) | One person can schedule at most two launches a day. Mostly affects prolific hunters. | PH help |
| Description limit raised to 500 characters | Older guides still say 260. | PH help |
| Launch assistant; "Topics" renamed "Launch Tags" | Paste your URL and PH pre-fills the title, tagline, links, tags and images. Up to 3 launch tags. | PH changelog |
How does Product Hunt launch day work?
- Timing. Your launch goes live at 12:01 AM Pacific and competes until midnight Pacific (PH). Product Hunt says "the best day is the one you're most prepared for" (PH).
- Featuring. Every launch goes live, but the team hand-picks which ones are featured on the homepage. "Featuring is an editorial decision, not a checklist" (PH). Waitlist-only products, directories, templates, courses, services and vaporware are typically not featured (PH).
- Ranking. The leaderboard is ordered by points. Points come mainly from upvotes, with comments as an additional factor, and votes from established members count for more than votes from new accounts. The formula isn't public (PH, PH).
- Awards. Product of the Day, Week (Monday to Sunday) and Month go to the most points in each window, so one launch day feeds all three. There's no separate "launch week" mechanic (PH).
- The newsletter. The Daily Digest goes out every weekday with the previous day's top 10, to 350,000+ readers by Product Hunt's count (PH).
Do you need a hunter on Product Hunt?
No. A hunter is whoever posts the launch; the makers are the people who built it, and you can be both. Product Hunt says there's "no discernible advantage" to a third-party hunter and that the poster "doesn't affect ranking." By its own numbers, 79% of featured posts and 60% of #1 Product of the Day winners were self-hunted (PH). Paying a hunter or promoter is against the guidelines. If a well-known hunter offers to post you, the benefit is their followers seeing it, nothing more.
What are the Product Hunt image sizes and character limits?
| Field | Limit or spec | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Product name | 40 characters | |
| Tagline | 60 characters | Say what it does in plain words. |
| Description | 500 characters | Was 260 until 2025. |
| Thumbnail | Square, 240×240 recommended; JPG, PNG or GIF | Required. GIFs don't autoplay, so the first frame must work alone. PH's docs say both 2MB and 3MB; stay under 2MB. |
| Gallery | 1270×760 recommended | PH's docs disagree on the minimum (1 or 2). Plan on 3 or more. |
| Video | YouTube only, full URL, not private | Optional. A new upload can take ~12 hours to embed (PH). See launch video specs. |
| Interactive demo | Optional separate slot | Arcade, Storylane and similar. |
| First comment | 5,000 characters | PH says ~70% of Product of the Day, Week and Month winners had a maker first comment. |
| Launch tags | Up to 3, required | Formerly "Topics". |
| Promo code | Offer 25 characters, code 15 | Optional; needs an expiry date. |
| URL | Direct link to your product page | No shortened or tracking links. |

What do top Product Hunt launches have in common?
We looked at every daily top-3 launch on Product Hunt for 50 days (September 12 to October 31, 2026; 150 launches). Full method and data in the launch video study.
Product Hunt's own figures point the same way over a longer period: about 53% of Product of the Day winners since 2021 included a video, and about 70% of winners had a maker first comment (PH). These describe winners; they don't prove cause. But a launch with no video, no gallery and no first comment is competing with one hand tied.
When should you start preparing a Product Hunt launch?
Product Hunt doesn't publish a single checklist, so this pulls its advice into one timeline.
- 3+ months beforeJoin with a personal account (company accounts can't post) and be a real member: comment on launches, answer forum questions. New accounts must wait at least a week to post, and PH recommends joining 3+ months ahead (PH).
- 4 to 6 weeks beforeWrite the tagline and description and test them on people who don't know the product. Make the gallery and the launch video. Have co-makers create their own accounts so they can be credited.
- Up to 30 days beforeCreate the draft and schedule the day, then announce the date to your list. Prepare launch emails, social posts and an in-app banner in advance (PH).
- The day beforeWrite the first comment: who it's for, why you built it, what feedback you want, any offer. Upload the video to YouTube at least 12 hours before so it embeds. Split launch day into shifts.
- Launch day, from 12:01 AM PTPost your first comment, send the email, share the link everywhere you're genuinely active. Ask people to try it and give feedback, never to upvote. Reply to every comment as it comes in (PH).
- AfterKeep replying: people find launches for days. Measure against the goals you set (signups, feedback), add the badge to your site, and post updates in the forum. Relaunch when you ship something major (PH).
What gets a Product Hunt launch removed?
- Asking for upvotes, or anything that requires or rewards them, including upvote contests. (A general launch-day giveaway is allowed.)
- Paying for upvotes, comments or promotion services that promise them.
- Fake or extra accounts, bots, and coordinated voting. Product Hunt runs automated detection and removes non-genuine votes.
- Mass DMs, scraped email lists, copy-paste messages to strangers.
- Dropping your link in communities where you've never been active.
- Changing your URL to get around the two-month relaunch rule.

How many upvotes and signups does a #1 launch get?
| Launch | Result | What they did |
|---|---|---|
| Dub (March 2024) | #1 Product of the Day; 1,085 upvotes, ~210 comments, 663 signups on the day (about 8x their daily average) | A 25,000+ email list, an email at 12:01 AM, a pre-written first comment, a reply to every comment. Note: their teaser-page tactic no longer exists. |
| Flexprice (April 2025) | #1 Product of the Day; 488 upvotes, 81 comments, 50+ signups | Estimates 50 to 120 hours of prep; outreach in waves across the Pacific day. |
Both are self-reported by the founders. The useful lesson isn't the vote count: the launch was the end of weeks of list-building, and the day itself was spent in the comments.
Which Product Hunt launch tips are myths?
- "You need a famous hunter." Product Hunt says the poster doesn't affect ranking.
- "You need X upvotes to win." Points aren't upvotes, and the formula is private. Any fixed number is a guess from one day.
- "Launch at 12:01 sharp with Launch Now." Launch Now is gone; scheduled launches go live at 12:01 AM PT automatically.
- "Build a Coming Soon page for followers." Retired in August 2025.
- "Weekends are a hack." Product Hunt says weekend launches got 15% more Visit clicks, but gave no method. Less competition also means less traffic.
